HEALTHY NEW YEAR

It's just been a few days since the holiday.

Some of us gained a few pounds and others held on

to their diet and succeeded in taming their gut.

To start the new year right, let's take a look at ten foods

CNN listed the best foods that have high benefits

Here are some tips and tricks to help us in our mock interview:

::MY PERSONAL TIPS::

In 2006, I happened to have free time during the summer that I found it useful to look for a job - a job that is totally different from nursing that I would find equally or more enjoyable. It is concerned mostly with client complaints and one that involves a lot of active listening and therapeutic communication. I learned a lot from the whole experience and I want to share some of it with you. Let's begin with the things I learned about how to succeed in an interview.

1. One of the first things that one should do in preparing for an interview is to do extensive research. Research on interview tips. Research more about the company and the industry. Research about possible questions. Research about what it takes to ace the interview. Research about how to make an application letter and a resume. Research. Research. Research. Let me repeat that. Research. Research. Research. It's redundant but it pays a lot. It is probably one of the biggest tickets that will land you to your dream job. Some companies conduct tests to determine the proficiency of an applicant so if you do your homework, you'll be surprised by how far your knowledge will help you.

During the interview, the interviewer asked me about the job description of the position I was vying for. I answered her about what it was my personal experience about them and I also mentioned that it is a part of a larger industry which is also in demand in the country. She said that she was impressed. From that comment, I regained my confidence and started to feel more comfortable.

2. Create the best resume and application letter. In an industry where there are a lot of applicants, the initial judgement will be based on these two important documents. Once you fail on these, pray that you will be given another chance.

You should emphasize strengths, mention weaknesses but make it sound positive. Be sincere. Tell the truth but make your weaknesses into assets. Nobody is perfect. We make mistakes. But a mature professional knows that in order to grow, we should build on our strengths and learn from our weaknesses. Also, don't forget to bank on your previous experiences.

3. Know what YOU'RE looking for and know what THEY'RE looking for. Select possible employees that offer a lot of benefits for professional advancement and experience. Refer to their employee job description. This will serve as the basis for your resume and application letter. Modify your resume according to employee and to your career advancement.

4. Practice your answers to probable interview questions. Some employers repeat the same questions or they rephrase it. You're lucky if you bump into one. You might think that it will sound that you've rehearsed a lot. Make it sound natural. In times of moderate anxiety that you will have during the interview, you will focus on important things. And you want your rehearsed answers to be among them.

5. Be prepared for other questions. Just tell the truth but make it sound positive. Don't be too frank. Think before you speak. "No buts" is a no-no. Use it often or use its synonym, however. It will help you justify a previous statement. It is where you'll butt in positive statements.

6. Share your experiences and give examples in your answers. Don't answer a Yes or No Question with a Yes or No. Add more information.

7. When given a difficult question. Answer in one sentence only. The more things you say the more errors you'll commit.

8. Be passionate. Be confident.

9. Do deep breathing. Don't slouch.

10. Don't forget to ask a question. It is not just a one-way approach. Asking a question shows that you are assertive enough and you are interested.

11. Enjoy.

CSF Leak! ::::: Questions, Anyone?

What drains from your nose isn't just blood or mucus. It's CSF!

Are you having severe headaches, horizontal diplopia, change in hearing, tinnitus, blurring of vision, facial numbness or upper limb radicular symptoms (tingling)? You may be having CSF leakage. CSF leaks occur at the level of the spine especially the thoracic and cervicothoracic junction. They may be caused by overdraining CSF shunts or they follow spinal surgery, weaknesses in the roof of the middle ear or nasal trauma or surgery. (Click here or here for more information.)

Depending on the location, CSF leaks have different cool names: CSF rhinorrhea, CSF otorrhea or Spinal CSF leak, among others.

Brain Surgery Goes Awry in R.I.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — One operation went awry after an experienced brain surgeon insisted to a nurse he knew what side of the head to operate on — but got it wrong.

Another time, a doctor-in-training cut into the wrong side of a patient's head after skipping a pre-op checklist. In a third case, the chief resident started brain surgery in the wrong place, and the nurse didn't stop him. (Read more here.)

Nars Film Review

The movie Nars is an independent film that showcased the typical life of nursing students and registered nurses alike. It presented their hopes, dreams, triumphs and tribulations. It also reflected a harsh reality: that care and compassion, sometimes, comes second to personal prosperity.

Considering that it is an indie film, the movie is a thumbs up for showcasing a stellar cast and for mirroring an accurate depiction of the life of student nurses. Yet, it doesn't come without flaws. The storyline is not weaved perfectly and more emotions and heavier performances are expected from the cast.

Just like this review, the movie is so BITIN. I'm giving it 3 over 5 stars.

WAYS TO PROMOTE EFFECTIVE CIRCULATION

1. Ensure blood pressure is in normal range. (check series of BP; elderly has isolated type of hypertension–increase systolic with normal or high diastolic; Primary-due to obstruction, change in blood vessel; secondary-due to medical problems; hypotension is more dangerous in the elderly than hypertension)
2. Prevent and eliminate sources of pressure on the body. (constricting clothes such as socks, panty, choker, bracelet; advice the use of loose clothing)
3. Remind or assist patient to change position frequently.
4. Prevent pooling of blood in the extremities. (such as prolong standing; prone to develop DVT) 5. Encourage physical activity (such as stretching activities as tolerated by the person; avoid strenuous activities).
6. Prevent hypothermia, maintain body warmth.
7. Massage the body. (massage lightly it may cause purpura; done to aid circulation; skin is not tough and tight, subcutaneous tissue and blood vessels are thin; prone to bleeding and sensitive to pressure)
8. Monitor drugs for hypotensive effect.
9. Educate to reduce risk of cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol, obesity and inactivity.
10. Periodic exams of physical and mental health.

WAYS TO PROMOTE EFFECTIVE BREATHING

1. Prevent respiratory infection. (Prone to infection due to immunosenescence; PNA, URTI)
2. Obtain influenza and pneumonia vaccines. (The immune system is not keen to signal that something is wrong in the body; vaccines such as for PNA and influenza could easily affect one previously exposed to virus).
3. Avoid exposure to respiratory infection.
4. Seek medical attention promptly for signs of respiratory infection (such as cough and fever; report simple manifestations).
5. Report changes of sputum (Change in sputum may signal an abnormality.)
6. Regular deep breathing exercises (Muscles of the lungs are not that elastic already; prone to develop COPD; expel CO2; prevent retention and impediment in breathing)
7. Smoking cessation or avoidance of cigarette smoking (Instruct the ill effects of smoking; quitting is done gradually not abruptly; could not promote effective breathing; avoid passive smokers)
8. Provide proper room ventilation.
9. Adequate nutrition (Prone to develop influenza; provide humid air)
10. Instruct patient to turn, cough and deep breathe every 2 hours. (Prevent hypoxia to cells)
11. Monitor rate, depth, and rhythm of respiration, coloring, coughing pattern, blood gasses and mental status. (Increased rate and shallow breathing may indicate obstruction; normal rhythm-inhale, exhale, inhale; color of skin speaks of tissue perfusion; bluish-cyanosis)

Blood Donation

Safety Risks of Paid Blood Donation

It increases the risk of disease transmission through blood transfusion by as much as three times than the voluntary blood donation system

Five blood transmissible diseases:

Hepa B

Hepa C

Malaria (sign: fever)

Syphilis otherwise known as “bad blood” (sign: chancre)

Who Can Donate?

You can donate if you meet the following criteria:

16-65 years old

At least 50 kg for 450 mL donations

At least 40 kg for 250 mL donations

Pulse rate of regular rhythm at 50-100 bpm

Systolic pressure of 90-160 mmHg

Diastolic pressure of 60-100 mmHg

Hgb: 0.125 g/L (12.5 g/dL)

Temporary Deferrment of Donation

::CONDITION
(NEXT POSSIBLE TIME TO DONATE)

::Pregnant women
(Nine months after birth or 3 months after weaning)

::Those with acute febrile illness
(2-3 weeks when fully recovered)

::Previously donated
(6 months after)

::Those who will undergo a major operation
(1 year after)

::Those with skin lesion venipuncture
(after completely healed)

::Tattoos, skin pierce, earhole, needle puncture
(after 1 year)

::Exposed to HIV or Hepa B
(after 1 year)

::Those with malaria
(3 years after cessation of symptoms)

::Those who took alcohol
(after 12 hours)

Persons who cannot donate:

Persons with the following characteristics or diseases:

cancer

cardiac diseases

severe lung diseases

jaundice of unknown origin

use of prohibited drugs

high risk sexual behavior

inmates of mental institutions and prisons

high risk occupation

STIs

Prolonged bleeding

Unexplained weight loss of more than 5 kilograms in 6 months

Chronic alcoholic
